Hello, I am Joe Jewell, a student at Lakeshore High School in Stevensville, Michigan. I am am in the tenth grade, a member of the Lakeshore Marching Band and Symphonic Band (see the Lakeshore Percussion homepage), and a member of the Lakeshore Key Club, track team, Science Olympiad Team, and Academic Challenge Team.I am a member of St. Paul's Ev. Lutheran Church in Stevensville. I also volunteer to help coach the Lakeshore Middle School Spelling Team (I am a former member). The spelling team placed 3rd locally in the Cloverleaf Spelling Bee on February 4, with a score of 73 words out of 90. Lakeshore had one individual qualifier, Shawn Adams, who missed only 1 word. The winner of the Cloverleaf Individual Bee advances to the National Spelling Bee in Washington.
I like science, math, and NASA. My favorite movie is Apollo 13. I enjoy playing the timpani. I like classical music, especially music that is heavy on the timpani. My favorite timpani part is the introduction to Richard Strauss' "Also Sprach Zarathustra". To download a MIDI of this piece, click on the link.
News! The band is no longer considering "Also Sprach Zarathustra" and the score from Apollo 13 for the marching show next year. Mrs. V.K. has settled upon the music from the Broadway version of "Beauty and the Beast". The space show idea is still in the running for the 1999 band season, however.
Here is a picture of me playing the timpani, taken at the 1997 Michigan State Finals:
